The Best Places in New Jersey for Photoshoots
As a photographer, I’m constantly on the lookout for locations that offer variety, character, and that special light that brings a photo to life. Lucky for us, New Jersey is packed with beautiful spots that make for perfect photoshoot backdrops — whether you’re shooting engagements, family portraits, corporate headshots, or just looking to capture something creative. Here are some of my favorite go-to locations in the Garden State.
1. Liberty State Park (Jersey City)
With panoramic views of the Manhattan skyline, the Statue of Liberty, and the Hudson River, Liberty State Park is one of the most versatile locations for portraits and lifestyle shoots. You get both city vibes and peaceful waterfronts in one spot. Bonus: The historic Central Railroad Terminal adds great texture and architecture to your shots.
2. Sayen House & Gardens (Hamilton)
Sayen Gardens is a hidden gem full of winding paths, gazebos, stone bridges, and colorful flowers (especially in spring!). The scenery changes throughout the seasons, making it an ideal spot for engagement sessions, family photos, and even maternity shoots.
3. Asbury Park Boardwalk
Asbury Park has this perfect mix of beach town charm, iconic murals, vintage architecture, and vibrant color. Whether you’re going for an artistic urban look or classic beach shots, you’ll find endless variety here. Don’t forget the iconic Paramount Theater and Convention Hall as a backdrop!
4. Deep Cut Gardens (Middletown)
This place feels like a secret garden. It’s filled with beautiful stone staircases, greenhouses, flower gardens, and a peaceful, intimate atmosphere that’s great for couples and families looking for more of a storybook setting.
5. Cape May Beaches
If you’re willing to make the trip south, Cape May’s beaches and Victorian charm are unbeatable. The sunsets here are next-level, and you can capture both beach and historic architecture in one session. Sunset Point and the Cape May Lighthouse area are especially photogenic.
6. The Palisades (Alpine/Englewood Cliffs)
For more adventurous or dramatic shots, the cliffs and trails along the Palisades Interstate Park offer breathtaking views of the Hudson River and NYC skyline. It’s especially good for engagement shoots with an adventurous or outdoorsy couple.
7. Princeton University Campus
The architecture here is stunning. The ivy-covered stone buildings, archways, and beautiful grounds make this campus one of my favorite spots for elegant, timeless portraits.
8. Watchung Reservation
This large nature preserve offers miles of trails, streams, old stone bridges, and even a small waterfall. It’s great for outdoor shoots where you want a woodsy, peaceful backdrop.
9. Grounds for Sculpture (Hamilton)
If you’re looking for something more artistic and unique, this 42-acre sculpture park is filled with larger-than-life art pieces, beautifully landscaped grounds, and endless creative opportunities for portraits.
10. Hoboken Waterfront
For those who love an urban feel with water and skyline views, Hoboken’s waterfront never disappoints. Pier A Park and Sinatra Drive offer stunning sunset shots with the NYC skyline as the backdrop.

Pro Tip:
When choosing your photoshoot location, think about the vibe you’re going for: beachy, woodsy, urban, elegant, or artistic. Also, consider the time of day — golden hour makes every spot better!
